Nicoya Canton is the first canton in the province of Guanacaste and one of the regions of Costa Rica with the greatest historical, cultural, and natural wealth. Recognized as the birthplace of Chorotegan culture and as part of one of the world's five Blue Zones, Nicoya stands out for the longevity of its population, its traditions, and its contribution to the country's development.

The Annexation of the Partido de Nicoya
One of the most important events in the history of the canton took place on July 25, 1824, when the Partido de Nicoya decided, through a democratic and peaceful process, to voluntarily join Costa Rica.
This historic decision strengthened Costa Rican national identity and is commemorated every year as one of the country's most important civic dates, under the motto:
“From the Homeland, by our own choice.”
Culture and Identity
Nicoya preserves a valuable cultural heritage inherited from the indigenous Chorotegan peoples. Its traditions include pottery, traditional cuisine, music, masquerades, bull-riding festivals, patron saint celebrations, and diverse artistic and folkloric expressions that strengthen the identity of Guanacaste.
The canton is also internationally recognized as a Blue Zone, where people enjoy high life expectancy associated with a combination of healthy eating, physical activity, strong family and community ties, and a balanced way of life.
Economy
Nicoya's economy is supported by activities such as cattle ranching, agriculture, commerce, tourism, fishing, and services. Destinations such as Sámara and Nosara have placed the canton on the international map thanks to their scenic beauty, biodiversity, and growing opportunities for sustainable tourism.
Local Government
The administration of the canton is the responsibility of the Municipality of Nicoya, which includes the Municipal Mayor's Office, the Municipal Council, and various administrative bodies.
The Mayor's Office provides executive leadership for local government and is responsible for implementing the decisions of the Municipal Council, managing municipal resources, and promoting the comprehensive development of the canton through public works, services, and projects that improve the quality of life of its residents.
The Municipal Council, composed of democratically elected council members and district representatives, is responsible for approving policies, regulations, and budgets, as well as exercising political oversight of municipal management, ensuring transparent administration focused on the well-being of the community.
